Are you ready for it?
Once again, Taylor Swift has managed to completely change her music genre for her upcoming album, “Reputation”. Her first released single for the album, “Look What You Made Me Do”, amassed a multitude of reviews, all of which were either hit or miss. Her second promotional single, “…Ready For It”, was released on September 3rd, after being previewed at a college football game.
At first listen, one might not think that this was a romantic song due to the fact that it gives off similar vibes to “Look What You Made Me Do”, which was more of an anthem to all the negative press she has received.
Upon a second listen and paying attention to the lyrics, it is quite clear that this is a 3 minute and 28 second love song.
This song tells of a relationship with one of her beaus. This lyric in verse one gives a slight idea about what he is like, “some boys are tryin’ too hard – He don’t try at all, though – Younger than my exes but he act like such a man, so – I see nothing better, I keep him forever”.
This line has many questioning if “…Ready For It” is about Swift’s current boyfriend, Joe Alwyn. He is younger than the rest of her past boyfriends and she also liked a fan theory post on Tumblr suggesting that it was him. Swift doesn’t have a reputation for singing and telling, so perhaps her fans will never know.
The style of the chorus greatly resembles Swift’s song “Style” off of her previous record, 1989. Perhaps those that are shocked by the change in direction of her new music will be more inclined to listen to “…Ready For It” because of this.
In the line, “every lover known in comparison is a failure – I forget their names now”, Swift definitely seems to be smitten with this love interest. Could “Reputation” be an edgy, pop, love album or could it be a statement album combatting the loads of controversial and hot topic press about her? The title suggests the latter, but Swift is known to surprise her audience, so it is up in the air.
Overall, the new sound that Swift has created for herself is sure to turn heads and cause commotion. When “Reputation” drops on November 10th, it is going to be big.
